Cats sometimes have a funny way of showing affection. Unlike dogs, who may greet you with a wagging tail and plenty of excitement, cats can be a little more subtle about expressing their feelings.
From slow blinks to following you from room to room, your cat may be telling you just how much they love and trust you without you even realizing it. At Whitney’s Waggin’ Tails, we love getting to know the unique personalities of the pets we care for. Here are some common ways your cat may be showing you affection.
They Give You Slow Blinks
Have you ever noticed your cat looking at you and slowly closing and opening their eyes? Often called a “cat kiss,” slow blinking can be a sign that your cat feels relaxed and comfortable around you.
Try slowly blinking back. It is a simple way to communicate with your cat on their terms.
They Purr Around You
Purring can have several meanings, but cats commonly purr when they are relaxed and enjoying attention. If your cat curls up beside you and starts purring while you pet them, there is a good chance they are feeling comfortable and content.
They Follow You Around
Does your cat seem to appear in every room you enter? They may not always want to sit directly on your lap, but simply choosing to stay close to you can be a sign of affection.
Whether they are following you into the kitchen or supervising while you work, your cat may just enjoy being part of whatever you are doing.
They Rub Against You
When your cat rubs their face, head, or body against you, they are doing more than asking for attention. Cats have scent glands around their face and body, and rubbing can be a way of marking familiar people and objects.
Think of it as your cat’s way of saying, “You’re part of my family.”
They Knead You
If your cat pushes their paws back and forth against your lap, blanket, or even your stomach, you have probably experienced “making biscuits.”
Kneading is a behavior that begins when cats are kittens. Many adult cats continue to knead when they feel comfortable and relaxed. If your cat chooses you as their favorite biscuit-making spot, take it as a compliment!
They Show You Their Belly
A cat’s belly is a vulnerable area, so rolling over and showing it to you can demonstrate trust. However, this does not always mean your cat wants a belly rub!
Pay attention to your cat’s body language before reaching in for a pet. Sometimes simply showing you their belly is their way of letting you know they feel safe around you.
They Bring You Their Favorite Toys
Finding a toy mouse or ball dropped beside you might seem random, but your cat may be inviting you to play or sharing something they enjoy.
Interactive play is also a great way to strengthen your bond and give your cat physical and mental stimulation.
They Sleep Near You
Cats tend to choose sleeping spots where they feel secure. If your cat regularly curls up beside you, sleeps at the foot of your bed, or chooses your lap for a nap, it can be a strong sign of trust.
After all, there are plenty of places your cat could sleep, and they chose to be near you!
They Groom You
Cats often groom other cats they are bonded with. If your cat occasionally licks your hand, arm, or even your hair, they may be treating you like a member of their family.
While their sandpaper-like tongue may not feel quite as pleasant as they think it does, the gesture can be a sweet sign of affection.
Every Cat Shows Love Differently
Just like people, every cat has their own personality. Some cats want to cuddle all day, while others prefer to show affection by simply sitting nearby. Learning your cat’s individual behaviors can help you better understand when they are showing you love, trust, and affection.
At Whitney’s Waggin’ Tails, we understand that every pet deserves care that fits their personality and routine. With personalized in-home pet sitting, your cat can remain in the familiar environment they love while receiving attention and care while you’re away.
